When a story is breaking, a television network or radio station will interrupt regular programming to cover the story. A countdown graphic usually appears, and the newscast is paused until all network affiliates are ready to switch over to the special report. The network then introduces the anchor and the story at hand. Depending on the story, it may only last a few minutes, or it may run for hours or even days. Often the newscast will be followed by an extended analysis of the events covered by the breaking story.

In the past, breaking news coverage was restricted to highly urgent events that required a national broadcast interruption such as a natural disaster or the assassination of a world leader. But today, 24-hour news channels have become more common, and lower thirds and alert crawls are used to break stories throughout the day.
