Streaming news has a lot of promises. It’s cheaper to build a library of news, it’s ubiquitous, and it brings breaking news to viewers wherever they are.

Several media outlets have invested hundreds of millions of dollars to make streaming news a success. Despite their high hopes, streaming executives have remained cautious. They have avoided overhyping their product and have made it easy for viewers to customize the experience.

Broadcast and cable news have historically been profitable businesses. But consumers have become frustrated with low quality, high cost products. That frustration has created a kindling for innovative news operations.

Streaming news has proven to be an attractive target for niche audiences. A recent study found that 85 percent of American households subscribe to at least one streaming service. The major news networks have spent hundreds of millions of dollars to repurpose their programming for the streaming audience. These networks have also scheduled regular nightly news programs for streaming viewers.

While broadcast and cable have had a good run, newer, more overtly political news operations are likely to emerge in the future. This could reshape the way political coverage is covered.

In 2020, CNN, Fox, and MSNBC combined to earn $3 billion in profit. That amount could easily double by 2023. Those three networks would earn a share of the profits from a large number of free news streamers.

Many free streamers try to resemble cable in their approach. Their goal is to convince viewers to cut their cable subscriptions. However, they also want to promote cable-quality news.
