When a breaking news event occurs, television and radio networks interrupt regular programming (or in the case of network affiliates with scheduled newscasts, pause their live feed and give a countdown sequence to allow affiliated stations to switch to the network’s feed). The interruption may be for a brief newsflash or special report; if the story warrants prolonged coverage, a lower third or alert crawl might be used instead of a cut-in. This is more common on 24-hour news channels, where live newscasts can be interrupted at any time for a quick break.
