Article about Trending
Breaking news is the segment of a national or local television or radio broadcast that reports on urgent events that require immediate, widespread coverage. Typically, breaking news requires an interruption of non-news programming or regular newscasts to provide the report, and network affiliates are urged to stand by while a countdown sequence is displayed to allow them to switch to the network feed to join the coverage. The graphic used to signal a breaking story is often different from standard lower thirds and alert crawls, and may include an appropriate music cue. Prior to the development of 24-hour news networks, such interruptions were typically reserved for extremely serious events such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy.
