Streaming news has proven to be more successful than traditional broadcast TV news. It has attracted mass audiences and niche audiences. The major news networks have invested hundreds of millions of dollars in streaming operations.

In addition to being an economical method for building news libraries, streaming has proven to be a way to reach viewers where they are. Today, 85 percent of households subscribe to at least one streaming service.

In contrast to television’s linear style, streaming news arrives on the viewer’s time schedule. This reduces the scarcity in the media equation. And it means that you can watch it anywhere, anytime.

Some of the top free streaming news services have a similar approach. Their goal is to deliver cable-quality news. They offer reruns and documentaries, and they also feature regular nightly news programs.

One popular streamer, NewsBreak, features local news as well as current events. Users can comment and express opinions, and they can block topics from appearing in their feed.

Another streamer, Jackson, has a laid-back approach to reporting. It’s more inclined to tell stories, and its episodes are twice as long as conventional nightly news.

Despite the popularity of free streamers, the cable news industry is still a lucrative business. According to research from PFC, cable television generated more than $3 billion in revenue in 2020. However, cable’s audience share dropped from 76 percent in 2015 to 56 percent in 2021.

Streaming has also demonstrated a tendency to encourage siloing. With a multiplicity of new choices, it’s likely that political news coverage will shift to more partisan channels.
