The phrase “breaking news” has many meanings, but in the case of TV news, it refers to the most significant story of the moment. For instance, a terrorist attack during the morning commute may be considered breaking news.
When a local television station is notified of a breaking event, they can either interrupt the program to cover the story or revert to their normal schedule. If a newscast is interrupted, the anchor may remind viewers that the full report is available on the local news.
In the days before DVRs, newscasters had to wait until the wheel turned, or they could rewind the DVR to the time when the news was originally recorded. However, news networks realized that they had a major advantage in serving a streaming audience.
News stations are now repurposing programming that was previously broadcast. In the case of NBC, a series of low-rated episodes of the Blacklist was used for the breaking news. This was followed by outro promos, which direct viewers to a network’s website and to their own streaming channels.
ABC, NBC, and CBS each have a number of cable news networks. They also own a number of local stations. Each of these networks has a strategy for repurposing its coverage.
Some streaming news networks include documentaries and news analysis. Other programs include podcasts, polls, and weekly shows for kids. First News Talking Points and the Week Junior Show are both child-friendly and include explanations of terms that are unfamiliar to children.
