Trending is a news feature that appears on the top right side of the screen during regularly scheduled non-news programming (and occasionally, during regular network newscasts). This graphic and distinctive music cue signal that a special report is to follow, often accompanied by a countdown sequence to allow local affiliate stations to switch to the network feed and insert their station identification in a short time. Previously, breaking news events that required immediate national coverage would be interrupted by “newsflash” or “special report” tickers that displayed the event as it unfolded, although this type of interruption is less common now that 24-hour news channels have become established.
