A Breaking News article is an alert that is transmitted by a national network television station to its affiliate stations and prompts the affiliates to interrupt their own non-news programming or, in some cases, even regularly scheduled newscasts, to broadcast a live news report about an event of significant importance. The breaking news is usually accompanied by a special graphic and distinctive music cues. Traditionally, such breaks (also known as Newsflash or Special Report) were reserved for events deemed of sufficient urgency to warrant interruptions of regular programming, but breaking news reports are now also often included during live weather coverage, especially in the United States.
