Breaking news is urgent news that requires an immediate interruption of regular non-news programming (or, in the case of a network newscast, its scheduled broadcast). A typical breaking news event will elicit a special opening graphic and distinctive audio cue, which tells viewers to stand by for a brief pause in normal programming, followed by a countdown sequence indicating that the national feed of a television or radio station will be briefly interrupted. This type of programming interruption is most common on 24-hour news channels, but has also been used by conventional networks during major events such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy, and severe weather events.
