Breaking news is coverage of events that are occurring right now, and may require an immediate interruption in regular non-news programming or, in the case of a national network newscast, its affiliates’ locally produced content. These “breaks” are usually initiated with a graphic and accompanying music cue, known as a newsflash or special report (and sometimes by the name Newsbreak on radio). Prior to the introduction of 24-hour news channels, such breaks were often limited to extremely urgent events, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy, which prompted the entire nation to interrupt programming on television and radio.
