Breaking news is a television or radio broadcast in which an urgent event is covered before other scheduled programming, such as an ongoing newscast or commercials. When an event occurs that requires the immediate reporting of breaking news, the station may halt or interrupt its regular non-news programing with a special graphic and distinctive music cue (also known as a “Newsflash” or a “Special Report”). Prior to the proliferation of 24-hour news channels, break-ins of regularly scheduled programs were generally restricted to high-end emergencies, such as the assassination of President John F.
