Breaking news is a story that, because of its urgency or importance, requires an immediate interruption in regular programming (or, if the event occurs during a live network broadcast, a breaking-news bulletin). A broadcaster will alert its affiliates ahead of time to expect the interruption, with the national feed pausing briefly and switching to a countdown sequence, so affiliated stations can join the break. Special report or newsflash graphics may be used, and lower thirds or other graphics may be altered to convey a sense of urgency. Breaking-news coverage may last for a few minutes, hours or days. In the past, such breaks were generally reserved for events that required nationwide coverage and forced numerous stations to interrupt their programming. These types of events often elicited significant public attention and concern, such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, or a severe, ongoing threat such as a hurricane or tornado.
