A breaking news event is a topic of interest that prompts immediate, in-depth coverage by a television or radio network. The network will usually alert its affiliate stations to the breaking news, asking them to “stand by”. During an on-air interruption of non-news programming or, in some cases, even a live, regularly scheduled newscast, a countdown is used to allow the station to switch over to the network’s feed. A special graphic, typically with distinctive music cues, and a news anchor are then introduced to cover the story at hand. In recent years, 24-hour news channels have begun to use breaking news tickers during regular programming, reducing the need for cut-ins.
