A story that’s breaking is a good example of a trending topic. It usually involves a situation that’s out of the ordinary, such as a plane crash or a fire. It’s also typically a story that is the most chaotic and confusing to cover. This makes it especially tempting to rush into reporting on the topic, but it’s important not to make assumptions about what’s happening. For instance, when NPR reported that Representative Gabrielle Giffords had died from a gunshot wound to the head, they based their information on eyewitness accounts and panicked bystanders who weren’t able to confirm her status with authorities.
