One of the most interesting trends to emerge over the past decade is the growth of streaming news. This form of media allows viewers to watch news on demand, and it travels with them wherever they go.

In fact, viewers have spent more time watching streaming programming than broadcast television. The major networks have invested hundreds of millions of dollars in the streaming business. They now schedule regular nightly news programs and offer documentaries and analysis.

Streaming news also makes the building of a news library more economical. Unlike radio, which reports on only yesterday’s news, streaming news arrives on a viewer’s demand. It reduces the scarcity in the media equation, and it’s proven to attract niche audiences.

In addition to the major networks, other news operations have entered the streaming market. For example, Fox has launched its Fox Nation app, which has attracted 1.5 million subscribers.

Other outlets include POLITICO, which covers national politics and trade issues. Newsy, Newsmax, and Cheddar have also planted flags in the streaming frontier. These news organizations are attempting to attract a partisan audience.

Another important trend to watch is the development of free news streamers. Many of these news organizations are trying to persuade cable-averse viewers to cut their subscriptions. By promoting cable-quality news, these streamers are effectively telling their viewers that they can cut their cable subscription and get the same content from a service that’s available online.

Streaming networks have also embraced local news. CBS, for example, has launched an aggressive local streaming news strategy. During the recent Sacramento shooting, the network picked up local coverage. And in 2022, CBS plans to beam 45,000 hours of local news to its streaming users.
