Television and radio news have been around for decades. Even the Internet has been around for some time. However, there have been some recent innovations in the way we receive news.
One of these innovations is streaming. Aside from being affordable and convenient, it makes news delivery timely. Not only does it reduce the scarcity factor in the media equation, but it also makes it easy to build a library of content.
Streaming has proven to be a great way to attract niche audiences. The major news networks have invested hundreds of millions of dollars in their streaming operations.
For example, Fox has attracted 1.5 million subscribers to its Fox Nation streaming app. Meanwhile, CBS News has launched a local streaming news strategy that will beam 45,000 hours of local news in 2022.
Streaming has the potential to disrupt the broadcast news business, and potentially even politics. However, news executives have to be careful to not overhype its appeal.
The streaming technology was not exactly new, but its emergence has been one of the largest cultural trends of the past decade. In fact, a number of studies indicate that viewers are spending more time watching streaming programs than they are watching traditional TV.
Of course, it’s not surprising that news organizations would be excited to enter the streaming game. Aside from the technological advantages, news networks are sensing a surge in their streaming audience.
To get into the game, they’re taking a page from cable and repurposing the best parts of their programming. This includes reruns and documentaries, plus news analysis.
