There are two main ways to consume current news: on TV and online. Cable broadcasters, like CNN and Fox, have traditionally been very profitable. It’s estimated that in 2020, those three networks will earn $3 billion in profit. Streaming services would love a piece of that pie. However, they are not entirely different from cable in terms of style and approach. In essence, free news sites are telling viewers that they don’t need cable to get top-notch news.

Streaming news has the potential to erode the audience of broadcast news channels. With streaming, news arrives on demand and goes with you wherever you go. The added benefit is that you can customize your experience. It also helps to reduce the element of scarcity in the media equation. As a result, more people are consuming news online.

Despite the difficulties, major news networks are betting on streaming to woo viewers. They have invested millions of dollars in streaming operations. For example, Fox has attracted 1.5 million subscribers to its Fox Nation streaming app. NBC News Now claims to stream 31 million hours of content each month. Streaming also makes it easier for local news organizations to reach more people.
