Current News is a type of television programming, typically broadcast by network stations in the United States and Canada. It consists of breaking news, special report, and news flash coverage.

Breaking news, also known as late-breaking news, is a form of coverage of a current issue that broadcasters feel warrants an interruption of scheduled programming in order to report its details. It is considered to be the most significant story of the moment and may be reported live or in a live shot.

Usually, the network announces that it is going to cover breaking news through an opening graphic or reverse countdown, and then an anchor welcomes viewers and introduces the story at hand. After that, the program continues as normal.

When the story is complete, the anchor may re-join regular daytime or late-night programming in progress, depending on the time of day and whether there are any segments left in the current hour. Often, network sister stations and digital subchannels are used as an alternate outlet for programs pre-empted due to a breaking news report.

In North America, breaking news was initially limited to extremely urgent news events such as the assassination of an important political figure or a severe weather event. Today, it is used for a variety of other stories, including the discovery of new scientific discoveries or a terrorist attack. Several cable channels still use the term “breaking news” when reporting on such stories, although it has been criticised for becoming overused and diluted by 24-hour news channels.
