Current News is the segment on a television or radio broadcast that interrupts current non-news programming to report breaking news events. These segments may be called “Newsflash,” “News Special” or “Special Report.” During an event that requires a cut-in, the network will normally alert its affiliates and tell them to stand by for the interruption, and it may change its regular network feed to a countdown sequence to allow the affiliates to switch over to the national news feed. In addition, station imaging promos and lower thirds are often altered to convey a sense of urgency. This type of breaking news reporting was commonplace until the advent of 24-hour television and radio networks, when it became possible to continuously monitor the world’s events with live feeds from satellite or broadband.
