In broadcast journalism, breaking news is the term for an urgent news event that necessitates an interruption of non-news programming, or occasionally, even a live network television or radio newscast. When such an event occurs, the station usually alerts its affiliates and instructs them to “stand by” for a special report, or “Newsflash”. A countdown graphic often appears during this time, along with the newsflash music cue. In addition, lower thirds and other graphics may be altered to reflect the urgency of the story. Historically, such breaks were reserved for events requiring nationwide coverage, such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy in 1963.
