When a news event occurs that warrants interruption of current non-news programming or, in the case of regularly scheduled network television and radio newscasts, the regular program, it is usually announced through an opening graphic and distinctive music cue. This is commonly known as a “Newsflash”, but also can be called a Special Report or Breaking News. It may only last a short time, or it may continue for hours and even days. During sustained coverage, the lower thirds and other graphics are altered to convey urgency. Prior to the advent of 24-hour news networks, cut-ins were rarely used outside of a breaking news event.
