Breaking news is an event that prompts a national or local broadcast network to interrupt non-news programming, and/or regular ongoing newscasts, for live coverage. The breaking news event is usually identified by a distinct opening graphic (often with a distinctive music cue) and a special announcer. Often, lower thirds and other graphics are modified to convey a sense of urgency. Breaking news reports may be short or extended for hours or days, and may be presented as either a newsflash or special report. Before the advent of 24-hour news networks, such interruptions were generally restricted to extremely serious events such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy in 1963.
