Trending is the term used for the current news items that are popular in a particular country.
Breaking News is a news item of such significance that it warrants an interruption of regular non-news programming, or occasionally, the regularly scheduled live network newscast. The breaking news event is usually accompanied by a special opening graphic and a distinctive music cue. Depending on the news item, the broadcast may last for a few minutes, or for hours and even days as networks continue to cover the story. Breaking news is also called a newsflash or a special report. Prior to the proliferation of 24-hour news channels, such interruptions were usually reserved for extreme events such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy in 1963.
