When a story breaks, the network may be able to interrupt programming for a short period. This type of interruption is commonly called breaking news, special report, or live story.
During this time, local stations may take the opportunity to break away from the network feed and begin their own newscast. The coverage may also be passed to a reporter at the location of the breaking event. As the story breaks, the reporter might provide additional information or a deeper analysis.
Similarly, when a story is over, the network may resume its previous programming. However, this action is not guaranteed. It depends on the length of the coverage and the program’s schedule. If the program is longer than 20 or 45 minutes, it may need to be rescheduled.
The network will notify its affiliates of the interruption. A “breaking news” graphic will be displayed. Often, it will include music or a disclaimer that more information will be available on the local station’s website or newscast.
News breaks can be used for stories that are highly relevant to viewers. During this time, regular commercial advertising is likely to be suspended. Syndicated programs and digital subchannels are available for alternate outlet for programming.
