Extreme weather nationwide

Parts of Kentucky and Missouri have been left inundated by flash floods. ABC’s Andrew Dymburt reports.

Breaking news, also called late-breaking news, special report, or news flash, is the most recent and widely-watched story in a given moment. It can also refer to a story that was first reported by another news organization but was not immediately broadcast on air. Occasionally, a breaking story will be followed by “Just In” or other similar titles. Regardless of the terminology, breaking news is synonymous with “live story.”

In Louisiana, Hurricane Katrina has caused insurance companies to close shop, leaving homeowners unable to pay for damages caused by the storm. However, a branch manager of the Lafayette Parish library has spoken out against censorship during a library board meeting. Cara Chance spoke out against attempts to ban books or restrict their displays. It is not clear why these efforts have been deemed inappropriate. Regardless of the reasoning, the issue will only intensify.

Breaking news may interrupt a TV show or episode during prime time. This is especially problematic for highly-rated programs, or those that have a limited amount of time left to air. As an example, ABC’s April 2017 episode of Scandal was interrupted by the Shayrat missile strike. In such a situation, the television network would often pause its normal programming to allow other network affiliates to join the feed. The anchor introduces the story and the music emphasized its urgency.
