When a news event occurs that warrants the interruption of current non-news programming or, in the case of national network newscasts, regularly scheduled broadcasts, a breaking-news cut-in is provided. This is typically accompanied by a countdown sequence and a distinctive music cue to indicate that the program will be returning shortly. This is commonly seen on 24-hour cable and satellite networks, which have anchors on duty ready to interrupt programming at any time. This is less common on regular, scheduled broadcasts, though in the past a breaking-news break was required for major events such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, or if severe weather threatened a large area. More recently, however, stations have been able to use the ticker feature of their local newscasts for certain breaking stories, which has diminished the need for such cut-ins.
