Historically, broadcast news has been profitable business. But as streaming began to spread, networks started to sense a technological advantage that would allow them to serve the streaming audience.
The networks have invested hundreds of millions of dollars in streaming operations. While they have high hopes for streaming, they don’t overhype the service.
Streaming news is similar to cable’s approach. It arrives on demand and allows viewers to personalize the experience. Streaming news services are usually independent and unbiased. They also provide comprehensive news and feature links to local TV stations and media.
As with cable, networks will often repurpose their programming. For instance, when coverage of the Pittsburgh bridge collapse interrupts the network feed, the local station may pipe coverage to the streamers. The network may also switch back to the newscast at the end of the coverage.
A breaking news report can be several minutes long. The network may suspend commercial advertising for this sustained coverage. During the coverage, the reporter at the location of the breaking event may also share more information. The network will notify all affiliates of the coverage.
When coverage of a breaking news story ends, the anchor may introduce the story and remind viewers that more details will be on the local news. Afterward, the network may resume its previous programming or begin a new program. The anchor will often change the lower thirds to convey a sense of urgency.
The networks may also integrate their analysis of the story into the broadcast. In fact, this is what occurred during the April 2017 Shayrat missile strike that interrupted a new episode of Scandal.
