A “Newsflash” or a “Special report” is an urgent breaking news story that necessitates the interruption of non-news programming (or, in rare cases, regular network newscasts). When such events occur, a station or network will alert all affiliates to a “stand by” sequence; the network may also pause its own feed to allow stations to switch over. Often, these break-ins are accompanied by a distinctive music cue and an altered lower third graphic to convey a sense of urgency. In the pre-digital era, such interruptions were reserved for extremely serious news stories such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, which required a nationwide interrupt of television and radio programming.
