Streaming news is a long-gestating cultural trend. It’s a convergence of technological advancement, cultural trends, and consumer frustrations. In the case of video streaming, the technology has proved to attract a mass audience, reducing scarcity in the media equation.
For years, television networks and cable broadcasters have dominated the news business. Historically, these organizations have been profitable. However, the advent of online video streaming is likely to change the way political coverage is crafted.
Streaming is the same as watching television, but with the added benefit of being able to watch it from anywhere in the world. Unlike cable, this type of news service does not require expensive negotiations with cable companies to access. This eliminates the barriers that keep innovators from entering the market.
There are a few major streaming networks out there. These include NBC News, CBS, CNN, Fox, and Al Jazeera. Each network offers reruns, news analysis, and documentaries. These networks also have a regular nightly news program.
They’ve invested hundreds of millions of dollars in their streaming operations. The big three have high hopes for the medium. They’re betting that streaming will reshape political news coverage and encourage consumers to cut their cable subscriptions.
Streaming will allow viewers to customize their experience. They’ll be able to block trending topics, follow local news, and even express their opinions on what’s going on in their community. They’ll also be able to increase the geographic coverage they receive.
In the process, they’ll be able to support small publishers. A recent study found that 85 percent of households have at least one streaming service.
