Before the days of 24-hour news networks, when breaking events arose that required the interruption of regular programming, stations used to interrupt their normal broadcasts through special break-ins called “Newsflash” or “Special report.” Today, many major network affiliates utilize tickers during their regularly scheduled programs that identify current stories, eliminating the need for an out-of-the-ordinary cut-in. During this type of Special Report, the station name and call letters are usually displayed over an opening graphic. This graphic is often accompanied by a distinctive music cue and a countdown sequence for network affiliates to switch to the breaking news feed.
