Breaking news is news that is so significant that it requires current non-news programming, or in the case of a national network, a regular newscast to be interrupted. This type of breaking news is usually accompanied by a distinctive music cue, and often begins with a countdown sequence on the network feed to allow affiliates to switch to the live newscast. It is also common for networks to use “Newsflash” or “Special Report” graphics and lower thirds during regularly scheduled newscasts, lessening the need for cut-ins. This is especially true for severe weather events, which may trigger localized warnings, such as tornado or hurricane alerts. This is more common at 24-hour news channels.
