A breaking news story is a current event that warrants the immediate interruption of regular non-news programming (and sometimes regularly scheduled network newscasts, as well). When a breaking news story occurs, a national network usually interrupts its regular non-news feed with a special graphic and music cue. This is known as a “Newsflash” or a “Special report.” In the days before 24-hour news networks, such breaks were only reserved for extremely urgent events, such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. The breaking news is then followed by a ticker that displays the latest developments. Station imaging promos or lower thirds may also be altered to convey the urgency of the situation.
