Breaking news is a major current event or development in a timely manner that requires an immediate interruption of regular programming to provide ongoing coverage. Prior to the existence of 24-hour news channels, such events were primarily limited to those of national significance, such as natural disasters or the assassination of a president. The term is also used for breaking news stories on the internet, where news websites often interrupt normal web content or use scrolling tickers to cover events as they happen. On television and radio, news breaks are generally accompanied by a special opening graphic and a distinctive music cue. This may then be followed by a countdown sequence to allow network affiliates to join the live feed and announce that the program is now breaking news.
