If a breaking news event occurs that warrants the interruption of current non-news programming or regular, regularly scheduled newscasts, television broadcasters will typically alert their network affiliates to stand by. A countdown sequence will then begin, to allow the local stations to switch over to the network’s feed. A news anchor will then come on air to break the story at hand, often accompanied by a distinctive opening graphic and a music cue that conveys urgency.[1] In addition, lower thirds and other graphics may be altered to emphasize the breaking nature of the story. Breaking news is also known as a newsflash or a special report.
