Whether you’re a reporter, broadcaster, or news consumer, you’ve probably heard the term breaking news. It can refer to a live story, a report about an old story, or even something that has not happened yet.
Typically, breaking news is reported before the news organization has a chance to report it. This can lead to sketchy coverage, because there is not enough information at the time. It is also likely that the information will be incomplete, which can be problematic when you’re researching later.
Sometimes, a network will break from its newscast to provide breaking news. This may be during the middle of a prime time program, or it may interrupt an overnight newscast. If the breaking news is particularly important, a network may suspend commercial advertising for the duration of the coverage.
Another form of breaking news is the “special report.” A special report is a story that lasts several hours or even days. It may be a story that is reported by a reporter at the scene of a breaking event. The story will usually be accompanied by an internal alert service to notify staff members about the event. The report will include a disclaimer stating that there may be more information.
Sometimes, a breaking news theme will be used on radio stations. The theme should have an urgent tenor, and the music should be an affirmative sign of its importance. However, it is seldom used for non-breaking news.
