Current News
Trending is a term used by news media to refer to breaking news stories that are currently popular with viewers. Typically, these stories are trending on social media platforms such as Twitter and Facebook. Upon the discovery of a trending story, the news anchor may interrupt normal programming and announce the topic to the audience. The network may also alert its affiliates, allowing them to break into the national feed for the story as well. The interruption may last for several minutes or multiple hours or days, depending on the severity of the event. This type of news is usually covered through a special breaking news report, known as Newsflash or Special report. Previously, programming interruptions were reserved for events with widespread coverage, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy in 1963, which caused numerous stations to interrupt their regular programming.
