About Trending
Breaking news is the term used for television and radio programming that interrupts current non-news programming (or, before the existence of 24-hour news networks, regularly scheduled network newscasts) to provide immediate coverage on a breaking news event. These breaks are usually preceded by a station identification open, a countdown sequence, or a newsflash graphic and a distinctive music cue. When a news event warrants continuous or extended coverage, a special report may follow the cut-in. Alternatively, the network may use a ticker or lower third graphics for select stories that require urgent coverage. “Newsflash” and “Special report” are similar terms, often used to refer to a single breaking story rather than an entire series.
