The broadcast news business has been around for decades, but a new technology is changing the way we get our news. With streaming, TV news is becoming more ubiquitous. In fact, one in three Americans now watches streaming video.
A recent study by Avalere found that viewers spent an average of more time watching streaming content than they did watching traditional broadcast. This means they were more engaged with the story.
Streaming also allows for timely delivery of news. Viewers can customize their experience and access their favorite news sources, including social media. Additionally, streaming makes it economical to build a library of media. For example, CBS News plans to beam 45,000 hours of local news in 2022.
Online video streaming will also not be bounded by costly negotiations with cable companies. As a result, new overtly political news operations like One America News are likely to enter the marketplace.
Aside from the usual breaking news, major streaming networks also offer documentaries, reruns, and news analysis. They also have a bottom tab bar that helps viewers discover stories. Users can set custom notifications for trending topics.
Streaming has proven successful for niche audiences. Fox Nation, for example, has attracted 1.5 million subscribers. These audiences are willing to pay for content.
Unlike television, where viewers have to match programmers’ clocks to stay abreast of the latest news, streaming news travels wherever the viewer is. Even DVRs enable time-shifting.
Streaming has also helped news networks realize their technological advantage. Despite the challenges of the early days, they have invested hundreds of millions of dollars in their streaming operations. Now, they have high hopes for the future.
