In television and radio broadcasting, breaking news is a type of report that interrupts ongoing non-news programming (or, in the case of a 24-hour news network, a live regular scheduled newscast) to cover an immediately developing story. A national network may alert its affiliated stations with a countdown sequence to indicate when the break will occur, and may then introduce the news anchor who will cover the story. During a breaking news event, lower thirds and other graphics may be altered to communicate a sense of urgency. Before the advent of 24-hour news channels, such programming interruptions were limited to extremely urgent events, such as a major presidential assassination. Breaking news reports may last only minutes, or in the case of a severe weather event, continue for several hours or days. This is also known as a “Newsflash” or “Special Report”.
