During breaking news events, the regular commercial advertising may be interrupted for live coverage. This is common for national network newscasts and is often used for urgent or significant events such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy, which prompted nationwide interruptions of non-news programs in 1963. Depending on the severity of the event, the newscast might continue for several hours or days. In such cases, the network might use a “special report” graphic and music cue to introduce the coverage.
