During a prime time hour, a local news station may choose to break from the network feed and air the latest breaking news. In the case of ABC’s coverage of the April 2017 Shayrat missile strike, the station interrupted a new episode of Scandal.
A breaking news report can last a few minutes or may be several hours. During this time, the anchor will remind viewers that more details will be provided on the local news. The anchor may introduce the story and play music to emphasize the importance of the breaking news.
When the network coverage is over, the network may start back to previous programming. Or, it may switch to the reverse countdown. Depending on the length of the coverage, the network may continue the live shot of the anchor or cut to video of the breaking event.
Local stations can also join the network feed. However, they may be given cues from the network talent, such as “Attention” or “Extension Edition.” They may also be given the option to begin an evening newscast.
The network may also pause for a few seconds to reset coverage. The anchor may also change the lower thirds to emphasize the urgency of the story.
The network may provide an outro promo, which directs viewers to the local station’s website or a streaming news channel. Some stations may also offer an outro video that features the local reporter.
During a breaking news report, the network may pause to allow other affiliates to join the feed. The network may also have segments not aired. If the coverage is sustained, regular commercial advertising may be suspended.
