Breaking news is a breaking news story that elicits nationwide coverage and requires numerous stations to interrupt current non-news programming (or, in the case of television network news broadcasts, their regularly scheduled newscasts) to cover the event. The resulting “special report” may last a few minutes or multiple hours and days, depending on the seriousness of the news event. A special graphic is often used and a distinctive music cue plays to alert the viewer of the interruption. Historically, only the most urgent news events warranted interruptions of regular programming; this was especially true before 24-hour news networks. This type of news event was usually referred to as a Newsflash or a Special Report, and often featured a countdown sequence to allow network affiliates to switch to the network feed.
