Breaking news is a segment of a television or radio news program which interrupts current non-news programming or, in the case of network-affiliated stations, regularly scheduled broadcasts, to provide live reports on a breaking news event. Usually, a countdown is displayed to allow stations to switch to the network feed, and then an opening graphic and distinctive music cue are played, with a live news anchor introducing the story at hand. Often, networks integrate analysis about the story through analysts in-studio or via phone, satellite or broadband (B-GAN). Prior to the advent of 24-hour news channels, such interruptions were reserved for events that required nationwide coverage requiring numerous stations to interrupt regular broadcasts.
