Trending is a segment on Current News that talks about things that are currently popular or trending in society. Oftentimes, this segment will highlight the most searched items on Google and what people are talking about on social media platforms. It is usually accompanied by an article and/or video about the topic that is being highlighted. In the past, breaking news events would require an interruption of non-news programming, or in some cases regular network television newscasts (this was especially common prior to the advent of 24-hour cable and satellite news networks). In such instances, a network may alert its affiliates to “stand by for the special report”, using a distinctive graphic and countdown sequence.
