When breaking news occurs, national network television stations will interrupt regular programming to cover the story. Often, the network will use special graphics to mark the time of the break and will usually alert its affiliates to stand by for an upcoming interruption. The report may last a few minutes or a few hours or even days, depending on the severity of the event. In addition to the newsflash graphic and its distinctive music cue, lower thirds and other on-air graphics will be modified to convey a sense of urgency. This was common practice before 24-hour news networks existed.
