Breaking news is a term used by television and radio broadcasters to indicate an event that warrants interruption of current non-news programming (or, in the case of network newscasts, regular scheduled updates). It can also be used to refer to breaking news that would necessitate a special report. When a station interrupts its normal programming for breaking news, it typically uses an opening graphic and distinctively identifying music cues that are designed to convey the sense of urgency of the story. Before the advent of 24-hour news channels, such interrupts were rare and restricted to major events such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, as well as severe weather events, which usually were handled through cut-ins and alert crawls during regular programming.
