Oftentimes, when an important news story breaks, a local television station will interrupt their current news program. The station may also cut away to a video of the story. When the coverage is over, the station may begin a new program or join the feed of another station. The network may also have a live anchor on-air.
News reports may last hours or even days. When the coverage lasts longer than this, the network may have to preempt the program or schedule it for a later date. The network may also suspend regular commercial advertising. The coverage may include sketchy information because of limited information available at the time.
Sometimes, the news story will have a brief disclaimer to remind the viewer that the full story will be covered on the local television station. The anchor will also remind the viewer that they will be able to find more details on the station’s website or streaming news channel.
Breaking news may also interrupt a network’s overnight news program. This can occur if the network has to interrupt the program to allow another affiliate to join its feed. It also may interrupt the program during prime time. When the coverage ends, the network may switch back to the newscast.
The breaking news anchor usually introduces the story and may share more information as the story breaks. Networks may also integrate the story with their own analysis. The anchor may also modify the lower thirds to convey a sense of urgency.
