During prime time, a television or radio newscast may be interrupted by a “breaking news” report. This is also referred to as a “special report” or “late-breaking news.” This type of coverage is usually limited to a few commercial breaks, and may or may not involve live footage of the event.
During the early years of television, newscasters like Walter Cronkite often provided “breaking news” reports on the assassination of John F. Kennedy. They also provided coverage of the September 11, 2001 attacks. These early “breaking news” interruptions reflected the crude technology of the era.
Today, the term “breaking news” is used to describe the most important story of the moment. This may be a local event, a national story, or a story that has worldwide interest. Sometimes, the term is used to refer to an old story that has been resurrected.
A radio breaking news theme is rarely used to report non-breaking news. This theme must have a high tenor. For example, if the story is about a police officer who was shot in the line of duty, the music may be altered to sound like an alarm.
When a breaking news event occurs, the network talent will pause to let the local stations join the feed. The network may also allow the local stations to go back to the newscast after the coverage ends. The station may also be given the chance to air an extended edition, or to begin an evening newscast.
