Breaking news (also known as Newsflash or Special Report) is a television or radio show segment that is interrupted to cover breaking news events. These segments are often introduced with an alert crawl, a distinct music cue, and lower thirds that are adapted to convey urgency. Before 24-hour news networks, these breaks were usually reserved for extremely urgent events that would require numerous stations to interrupt their programming at once, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy. Many stations also provide regular breaking news updates during severe weather events, replacing commercial advertising. The breaking news segment may last only a few minutes or continue for several hours or days.
