When breaking news occurs, a national network or major local station will interrupt regular non-news programming (or, in the case of 24-hour cable channels, regularly scheduled newscasts) to break the story. This is known as a “newsflash” or “special report.” A countdown usually precedes the interruption, so that affiliate stations may join the network feed when they are ready.
